Career
Four decades growing companies, guiding leaders, & turning bold ideas into meaningful outcomes.
Over the course of more than four decades as a senior executive, CEO, investor, and board member, Jim has built a reputation for helping companies grow, scale, and create meaningful long-term value. His career has been defined by a combination of strategic thinking, operational discipline, and a deep understanding of how businesses succeed through strong leadership and partnerships.
Jim served as CEO of DEI Holdings, Inc. from 2000 to 2016, where he led the transformation of the company into a market leader in consumer electronics and automotive technology. During his tenure, he guided several key acquisitions, including Definitive Technology in 2004 and Polk Audio in 2006, helping position DEI as the number one market share leader in the U.S. home theater speaker category. He also negotiated an exclusive agreement supplying Sirius and XM satellite radios to the U.S. aftermarket, generating more than $500 million in sales in just four years, and helped launch a telematics joint venture that deployed over one million vehicle devices while producing more than a ten-fold return for investors.
Working with private equity partners including Charlesbank Capital Partners and Trivest Partners, and investment banks such as Goldman Sachs and JP Morgan, Jim raised more than $1 billion in debt and equity financing across multiple transactions. These included a $150 million NASDAQ IPO, several dividend recapitalizations, and a successful $305 million take-private transaction that returned more than 3.5× to DEI’s original investors. During his tenure the company completed and integrated eight acquisitions ranging from $10 million to $136 million in size. Following his retirement, the leadership team he built continued the company’s growth through acquisitions including D&M Holdings in 2018—parent company of Denon, Marantz, and Boston Acoustics—and Bowers & Wilkins in 2020.
Earlier in his career, Jim served as CEO of Clarion Corporation of America, where he held full P&L responsibility for the $560 million Western Hemisphere headquarters of the $1.8 billion Japanese public company. Prior to joining Clarion, he served as Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Altec Lansing.
Today Jim focuses on investing, serving as an active board member, and coaching founders and CEOs. Drawing on more than 25 years of experience as a CEO, he works closely with leadership teams to develop strategy, accelerate revenue and profit growth, and guide companies through transformational milestones.
He currently serves on the boards of companies including Envirowaste Services Group, Advanced Powering Systems, MantleMount, Getix Health, Local Media San Diego, Transit Auto, and Creative Multicare.
He also serves on the boards of nonprofit organizations including Forte for Children, Coral Reef Alliance, and Wyland Foundation.
Jim earned both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Business Administration from The Pennsylvania State University. He has served as a guest lecturer at Stanford University, the University of California, and other universities, and was honored to deliver the graduation address for Penn State’s Executive MBA program.
Committed to giving back, Jim is the Founder and Chairman of the Forte for Children Charitable Foundation, which has raised more than $8.5 million to support disadvantaged children.
Their attention to detail and commitment to quality truly stood out. We’ve already recommended them to others.
